We so need more productions of Marlowe’s Edward II in the world. I’ve seen and indeed own the (awesome, transgressive, weird, beautiful) Derek Jarman film; heard and recorded off the radio on to tape and repeatedly listened to an (excellent) audio production in the 1990s (inc. Adjoa Andoh as Isabella <3 ); and saw a (mediocre) student production when I was at university. I know the Globe (Sam Wanamaker theatre specifically) did a production in 2019 but I missed that.

It’s not enough. Also tumblr needs to be more aware of this play in general. A queer contemporary of Shakespeare wrote a play about a queer[1] king and frankly it’s superb. Disturbing, flawed, superb.

[1] Often interpreted as gay, but historically he did have illegitimate as well as legitimate children so was clearly having some sex with women he didn’t actually have to have - thus in modern terms I tend to assume he as bi. But this is one of those cases where “queer” is so damn useful as both a popular and academic term because it’s so nonspecific.

General disclaimers: 1) using any modern terms for sexuality for people in history is always tricky. But then that does apply to hetero/straight as well as everything else. ;-) 2) Edward II was a king and by definition awful (and his second “favourite”, Hugh le Despenser, was an absolute shithead). Doesn’t mean I can’t have feelings about him being in love with other men though. ;-)
